In a new interview with RPG Site, New Blood Interactive CEO Dave Oshry revealed a detail about the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop that might explain why it has been an overall more pleasant experience since the console’s launch. When asked about the process of porting its games over to different platforms, Oshry started by noting that bringing games to consoles is aggravating due to the certification process that prevents real time releases from happening.
“Porting to consoles is a pain in the ass. Console certifications, everything besides Steam, is a pain in the ass. Let’s just say that,” Oshry states. But more important to this story, Oshry then started to bring up Nintendo. Reportedly having DUSK running on Switch 2 with all the bells and whistles, Oshry slips into talking about how Nintendo is being pickier with which games launch on the eShop now that the Switch 2 is new.

“We’re just waiting for Nintendo to give us approval to actually launch it [DUSK] because they’re still pretty cagey about letting games launch on Switch 2,” Oshry said. “They don’t want it to just become a giant slop fest like the Switch 1 eShop became after a few years with just tons of shovelware on there. They’re still pretty choosy about who gets to launch their games on Switch 2.” That makes a lot of sense, even if it’s anecdotal.
With the launch of the Switch 2 last year, Nintendo has had a chance to reevaluate what made the original Switch eShop work and improve on the aspects that didn’t. One such aspect is the ability to filter games, which became a tremendous issue on Switch 1. Browse the eShop on the original console for more than a few minutes, and you’ll be inundated with so much shovelware that your eyes may roll out of your head. With Switch 2, there are filters in place to categorize games by Switch 1 or Switch 2 versions, making it easier to find games compatible directly with the new system.
It remains to be seen if these filters will prevail throughout the Switch 2’s entire lifecycle, but it has almost definitely resulted in a smoother beginning to the new generation.
