According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, the company has no plans to increase the price of the Switch 2 in the immediate future. After releasing its nine-month financial report yesterday, Furukawa held a Q&A with investors to field questions about the company’s plans for the coming year, among other things. One shareholder asked whether Nintendo would be revising the price of the Switch 2 in consideration with the cost of manufacturing components. Thankfully for non-early adopters, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for now.
Noting that Nintendo doesn’t discuss specific components in detail, Furukawa stated that the recent surge in memory pricing has not had a significant impact on Nintendo’s hardware profitability during its third quarter. He doesn’t anticipate that changing for the fourth quarter, either, and said that adjusting the price of the Switch 2 would require one than a single factor before being decided upon.

“Price changes will be determined comprehensively, taking into account not only profitability but also the adoption of the platform, sales trends and market conditions,” Furukawa said to investors. When asked about what Nintendo should focus on when deciding price, Furukawa stated that focusing purely on memory costs to determine the system’s MSRP would need to take a lot of things into consideration as it will have a knock-on effect for the second and third years of the console’s life, which are critical.
In a statement that I wish Nintendo would have understood sooner, Furukawa then explains that while Nintendo tries to avoid situations where it sells hardware at a loss, he doesn’t believe the company should be “overly influenced” by what could wind up being a short-term trend. If Nintendo can maintain Switch 2 pricing despite a drop in hardware profitability, it should be able to expand its potential audience and make up the difference through software sales.
Needless to say, it doesn’t seem like Nintendo wants to up the price of the Switch 2 any further. The console has been selling remarkably well despite its hefty MSRP, so increasing it more would only have a negative effect on future sales.
