Despite a rocky few months for video games, Nintendo has revealed today that the Switch 2 has moved over 17 million units since hitting stores in June 2025. Per its nine-month financial report and a report from CNBC, the new console moved seven million units in December 2025 alone. Much like has been stated before, the Nintendo Switch 2 is the company’s fastest-selling console ever.
Serkan Koto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC, “The implosion of sales, as predicted by some investors, did not happen in the holiday quarter.” That’s surprising considering how dour some of the holiday reports were for most companies. In America, Nintendo fell a little below sales expectations, but it seems the global launch of the console made up for that. We do know that the Switch 2 has been doing tremendously well in Japan, which features a cheaper Japanese-only variant.

Helping move those 17 million consoles were games like Mario Kart World, which has sold around 14 million units (or roughly 82% of Switch 2 owners), and Donkey Kong Bananza, which sold 4.25 million. Combined with console sales, Nintendo’s revenue rose 86% year-on-year, while profits rose 24%. That’s mighty impressive for a more expensive console releasing during a global economic crisis.
As for whether the Switch 2 can maintain this momentum, 2026 may prove to be difficult. With memory and SSD prices rising due to the AI bubble, it’s a matter of when, not if, Nintendo will raise the price. James McWhirter, senior analyst at Omdia, told CNBC, “Suppliers obviously have the upper hand with any new negotiations, so it’s only a matter of time until Nintendo – and Sony and Microsoft – run through their inventory of memory and renegotiate at higher prices.” He believes software bundles will start making a comeback for the 2026 holiday season, which will likely see the Switch 2 bundled with a game for cheaper than $500.
