Capcom has revealed a slew of intriguing new details regarding Resident Evil Requiem’s various gameplay mechanics.
Yesterday’s live Resident Evil Showcase presentation was not for the squeamish, as it showed off the game’s very gory new crafting mechanic.
Director Koshi Nakanishi explained how it works, while footage showed protagonist Grace Ashcroft collecting blood from the debris of a corpse’s mangled brain matter.
“In order to create specialized injectors, you’ll need to use infected blood. And since crafting requires blood, that means you’ll have to take down enemies,” he said.

Grace can also be seen sneaking behind a zombie and injecting it with a dose of infected blood, causing its entire body to explode and paint the surrounding surfaces with a massive spray of visceral claret.
As is standard with a Resident Evil title, Requiem will include multiple difficulty modes to accommodate all types of players. One mode in particular features the return of a series staple that diehard fans will welcome with open arms.
“If you choose Standard (Classic), ink ribbons will be needed to save the game when playing as Grace,” the Showcase narrator confirmed.

Ink ribbons mean limited saves, increasing the game’s tension for players by forcing them to think very carefully about when to save. It also means there is an increased risk of losing progress the longer the player goes without saving.
A previous trailer of the game showed us that Leon can wield melee weapons, and parry attacks with his hatchet. New gameplay in the Showcase shows a “sharpen” prompt appear onscreen, before an animation plays out of our floppy-haired hero giving his blade a quick grind. This seems to indicate that the sharpness of Leon’s hatchet will degrade after repeated use.

Finally, Nakanishi also touched on a particular gun of Grace’s.
“There may not be a lot of heavy weaponry, but as one symbolic weapon, there is a gun that takes the same name as the title, ‘Requiem’,” he explained.

“This large caliber assault revolver has limited ammo, but it’s the pinch hitter that can get Grace out of tight spots.”
Resident Evil Requiem will launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Steam on February 27th, 2026.
