According to some recent NielsenIQ data from Christopher Dring, EIC and co-founder of The Game Business, the Switch 2 has officially outsold the Dreamcast, PlayStation Vita, and Wii U in the UK. That means lifetime sales of those consoles in the region, not overall global numbers. If we compare that, the Nintendo Switch 2 is actually ahead of the Dreamcast and may have surpassed the Vita, even.
In the UK, the Switch 2 is the fastest-selling Nintendo platform of all-time. While specific numbers haven’t been released, it seems on track to beat the Switch 1’s five-million figure in the region (per 2022). We can compare it against the Dreamcast, Vita, and Wii U, though, with Sega’s final platform hitting only 240,000 and Sony’s last handheld not even registering on the charts.

While this normally wouldn’t be much of a story, it shows how strong the first six months have been for Nintendo’s new console. It was probably a given that the Switch 2 would be popular, but I don’t think anyone anticipated moving 10 million units in less than a year. That’s an incredible number and it has made the Switch 2 one of the fastest selling consoles ever. It will be interesting to see how well it did over the holiday season, which is usually a big time for any console manufacturer.
