Legendary game designer and director Hideki Kamiya has revealed that a particular Legend of Zelda game is a primary source of inspiration in his work.

Speaking to Japanese gaming publication Famitsu, Kamiya recalled a handful of games that had the biggest influence on him. The first game that came to mind for him was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

“This is a title that has become my textbook for creating games,” Kamiya said.

He then named Space Harrier, Gradius, and Castlevania as the other three essential games that inspired him most.

Zelda being a pillar of inspiration in Kamiya’s creative vision is apt, as his 2006 action-adventure cult favorite, Ōkami, is often favorably compared to Nintendo’s fantasy series. It was revealed late last year that an Ōkami sequel is in development.

Kamiya is also responsible for directing widely acclaimed games such as the original Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Bayonetta, and The Wonderful 101.
