Out of the blue this evening, Nintendo announced that the GameCube classic Luigi’s Mansion would be joining its lineup of titles offered for Switch Online subscribers. Set to join the service on October 30, 2025, it’s really the perfect game to play for Halloween. It also means all three games in the series are now playable on Switch 2, which is great.
Released all the way back when the GameCube launched in 2001, Luigi’s Mansion was a rather unique take on the Mario franchise that traded in the bright colors of the Mushroom Kingdom for a dark, mysterious mansion filled with ghosts. While technically not the first time Luigi had his own game (I believe the 1990 Game Watch title “Luigi’s Hammer Toss” was), it was the first time Nintendo released a new console without a proper “Super Mario” game day and date. That seems rather quaint now, as Nintendo has released four consoles without one in the years since.
While it would be nice to see the 3DS remake Luigi’s Mansion 3D get some love (where’s my HD port of that?!), at least this original game is now playable without hunting down a GameCube or 3DS. Nothing here is so fast paced as to require ultra precision, so it should be right at home on Nintendo’s GameCube emulator.
