Last week, Nintendo reportedly suffered a data breach at the hands of hacking group Crimson Collective. On social media, the group stated it had infiltrated Nintendo’s servers, though did not reveal what it had planned to do. Today, in a statement given to Japanese newspaper The Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo has responded to the breach and has stated the effects were limited to servers hosting its websites only.
In a short statement, the company wrote, “We have not confirmed any leak of personal information, and there has been no leak of development or business information.” While that’s not the most reassuring news, it does seem that the impact was relegated mostly to changing the text on official websites. The outlet even states as much in a translated article.
Interestingly, Nintendo has made no comment about the ongoing investigation into the origins of the Pokémon TeraLeak. As Polygon reported this past April, Nintendo had requested a subpoena to Discord to track down the users assumed responsible for hacking Game Freak. Maybe the ongoing nature of that investigation has prevented Nintendo from commenting, but it’s very odd to read a story about one hack while new information is coming out from a previous one.
