Towards the end of each year, Time Magazine creates a list of what it considers to be the “Best Inventions” for the last 12 months. Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Switch 2 has shown up on this year’s list, with Time writing, “The original Nintendo Switch rewrote the rules for portable gaming. Its 2025 sequel increases the power without sacrificing portability.” That should certainly cancel out all the naysayers who believed Nintendo was gearing up to launch a dud.

As Time explains, the Switch 2 sold 3.5 million units during its first week, making it the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history. The unit has continued that momentum, too, reaching almost 9 million units earlier this month, and moving an additional 2.4 million units during its first three months of sale in the US. The technical specs laid out in the blurb are accurate, but they don’t mean a lot without quality games. That’s the real Nintendo magic, even if the Switch 2 doesn’t quite have exclusives just yet.

In terms of gaming, Time also included the Xbox-branded ROG Xbox Ally X on its list, though that is a harder recommendation to make considering its price. With the cheaper model running $650 and not having any truly exclusive games, it’s hard to say if that device will make any kind of splash with gamers. For now, however, both it and the Switch 2 are getting their roses for innovating on a technical level, and that’s cool to see.
