Gearbox has made the decision to indefinitely delay the port of its latest looter shooter, Borderlands 4, for Switch 2. Having launched a little under two weeks ago on other platforms and with an originally scheduled early October date for Nintendo’s platform, it seems the developers thought the game wasn’t coming together well enough for a retail release. In a statement on Twitter, Gearbox writes:

“Greetings, Vault Hunters – We need to share that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. We do not take this decision lightly, but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that. Our hope is to also better align this release with the addition of cross saves, which we are working on and recognize is very important. We will update you all on the new release timing once we’ve fully adjusted our plans.”

While one could surmise that performance woes are the culprit for this delay, it comes after a few weeks of bad press surrounding Borderlands 4. On PC, in particular, even players on high-end machines are suffering issues. PS5 and Xbox Series X aren’t free from problems, but the PS5 Pro version seems particularly uncooked compared to the power on offer. Making matters worse, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has been antagonizing people on social media, stating the game is “pretty damn optimal” and that players should “code their own engines.” I’m assuming Gearbox and parent company 2K Games don’t want more bad publicity floating around.
