In a new overview trailer uploaded by Nintendo, the company has outlined some of the changes coming to the re-release of Super Mario Galaxy 1+2. In addition to higher resolution output (for both Switch 1 and 2), both games will now include an “Assist Mode” option that functions similarly to the one in Super Mario Odyssey. It will double players’ maximum health and won’t kill them if they fall off platforms and into the void (presumably until you run out of health). That would certainly be useful for younger players in Galaxy 2, which has some of the hardest levels ever put into a Mario game.
Storybook chapters
The rest of the overview trailer goes over things we already knew, such as the fact that Galaxy 1 and 2 will be receiving new storybook chapters. From what I can remember, I don’t even recall Galaxy 2 having a storybook, but it’s now a thing and will follow the struggles of two Luma named “Mari” and “Lu.” Galaxy 1, on the other hand, has an epilogue chapter that properly closes the story of Rosalina and her Luma’s. It’s not the biggest selling point, but it’s nice that Nintendo went through the effort of including something new, especially since the price is a little ridiculous.
amiibo support
Lastly, the overview trailer details the amiibo support that will be coming to both games, though this was actually highlighted in a press release following the September 12th Direct. Scanning any version of Mario or Rosalina will grant players a Life Mushroom and 1-Up Mushroom respectively. Other figures from the “Super Mario Bros.” line will grant coins and random amiibo will give star bits. I don’t think any of that is needed as, despite Galaxy 2 being tougher than normal, lives are ridiculously plentiful. Getting extra star bits might speed up the process of unlocking levels, however.
Co-op option
One last thing to mention is that Nintendo highlights the “co-op” option from Galaxy 2 and makes it sound as if it will be included in the first game. For those unaware, Super Mario Galaxy 2 introduced a revamped two-player mode where the second player would control a Luma. While it wasn’t quite like a full-on cooperative mode, player two could interrupt enemies, feed Mario star bits, and toss objects around the screen. In Galaxy 1, the second pointer was limited to simply grabbing star bits. It was pretty nifty and I do think it would be cool to backport into the original.
Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 release date
Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 will be heading to Nintendo Switch on October 2nd, 2025. A free update for Switch 2 will release sometime in the future and include both 4K resolution output and mouse controls.
