We might still be half a year away from Final Fantasy VII Remake hitting the Switch 2, but that hasn’t stopped Square Enix from talking about some of the new features that will be heading to the belated port. While these features will presumably be available in all versions of the game, the official website lists the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions as specifically receiving what the company calls “streamlined progression” tweaks. Essentially difficulty toggles, players coming to FF7R late can enable things like God Mode and Max Damage to plow through the game without much worry.

Here are the specific features available:

  • HP is always full
  • MP is always full
  • Limit gauge is always full
  • ATB gauge is always full
  • Damage dealt is always 9999

Square Enix notes that some of these features will not be applicable in certain situations, likely referring to either boss fights or the game’s unlockable Hard Mode. FF7R director Naoki Hamaguchi writes, “The introduction of the Streamlined Progression feature was done to allow the game to cater for individual players’ different lifestyles and play styles. The story is a major part of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and there are players who want to be able to enjoy the battles and exploration more casually while they really focus on that story.”

These features actually mimic similar things added to the re-releases of Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 on modern consoles. Sometimes when you’re replaying a game, you specifically want to relive the story without worrying too much about combat, so I get it. You could also just want to feel like a god, or maybe you aren’t quite skilled enough but are interested in the story and setting. Whatever the reason, Final Fantasy VII Remake will allow you to break it when the game finally launches on Switch 2 next February.
