In one of the final Kickstarter updates before Hollow Knight: Silksong releases (which is still a bizarre sensation to be writing), developer Team Cherry has revealed that the native Switch 2 version of Silksong will be a free upgrade for owners of the Switch port. Since the Kickstarter launched well before Nintendo ever had plans to create a successor console to the Switch, Team Cherry clearly did not have Switch 2 development on its minds. In what was likely an easier decision than emailing everyone who requested a Switch key to ask if they had a Switch 2, the upgrade pack is simply free and can be downloaded from the eShop after you redeem your code.
Now, I’m not sure how this will work for the physical edition of Silksong, but that isn’t set to release until sometime in 2026. I would imagine that it will have a discrete Switch 2 cartridge, though it might contain both the Switch 1 and 2 versions on the same cart. Team Cherry could also allow owners of the Switch 1 cartridge to download the upgrades, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves. For now, if you buy Silksong for Switch when it releases tomorrow, you can upgrade it for free to the Switch 2 version. That’s certainly a nice bonus after waiting the better part of a decade.
