According to a new report from Japanese publication Nikkei, the customer response to the Switch 2 has surprised Capcom. Capcom was shocked to learn that the hybrid console, despite its high price, is selling well, as it stated the response was “better than expected” from customers. The overwhelming sales numbers, which are north of eight million units currently, are much higher than Capcom’s best estimates and paint a picture of tremendous success for the platform.
Speaking to Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the majority of the article is focused on Monster Hunter Wilds and how Capcom feels about the sales momentum of that game. When asked about the high price of console hardware, Tsujimoto mentions that the current price of the PlayStation 5 seems to be hindering the profitability of Wilds since it creates a high barrier of entry. Naturally, this led into talk about the Switch 2, which comes in at almost half the cost of Sony’s platform.
As Tsujimoto explains, “The Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June 2025 at a price of ¥49,980 (tax included), and the response was better than we had expected. While prices vary by country, this reaffirmed the high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers.” Conversely, he notes that the PS5, “costs about ¥80,000 in Japanese yen. When you factor in the cost of software and monthly subscriptions, it comes to about ¥100,000 at the time of purchase. This is not an amount that can be easily reached, especially for younger generations.”
The Switch 2 is by no means cheap. As the most expensive Nintendo console by launch price in every region, Nintendo is facing an uphill battle when it comes to affordability. Compared against the PS5 and even Xbox Series X, however, the Switch 2 is a downright bargain for most. Still, the overwhelming success Nintendo has managed is beyond what anyone could have anticipated, including major publishers like Capcom. Whether that means Capcom will continue to support Nintendo’s platform is anyone’s guess, but I would imagine that the company is seriously considering a port of Wilds for the platform.
