Despite being around for more than 20 years now, the wildly popular Call of Duty series hasn’t made the jump to the silver screen. While I’m not sure anyone ever really expected a film from the franchise, Call of Duty will finally be making the jump to mainstream theaters in the near future. As reported by Deadline, both Paramount and Activision have signed a new deal to adapt COD into a movie under its Skydance label.
Skydance CEO David Ellison told the publication, “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty, this is truly a dream come true. From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”
Previously, Activision had attempted to bring Call of Duty to cineplexes in February 2018. At that time, Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima was attached with plans to make the film grittier and more realistic. As you can tell from the lack of a COD film, that eventually fizzled out in development hell. Whatever needed to change to finally get the series into theaters has, at last, been worked out.
President of Activision, Rob Kostich, told Deadline, “With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started. Our shared goal is quite simple — to create an unforgettable blockbuster movie experience that our community loves, and one that also excites and inspires new fans of the franchise.”
