While digital sales of video games have slowly been taking over physical copies for more than a decade now, there are sometimes exceptions where players will opt for the disc or cartridge if given the chance. One such example is with Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2, where developer CD Projekt Red has recently revealed that 75% of sales on Nintendo’s newest platform were from the physical edition versus digital download. While it’s hard to say why that reason is, it probably has to do with the fact that CDPR opted to include the full game on the cartridge rather than require a download.

This information comes from a financial results presentation made by the company, which breaks down not only its quarterly profits from game sales, but financial stats regarding cost of operation. Most of that won’t matter to fans of the game, though it’s great to see such transparency when it comes to business. Speaking to investors, CDPR CEO Michal Novakovski said the following:

“We believe that thanks to its high quality and Switch 2 exclusive enhancements, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is well positioned to benefit from the [Switch 2’s] growing user base. As of June, the vast majority of sales — which is around 70% — came from physical copies sold and that reflects the strength of our offering.” As you could assume, Novakovski also believes this success is due to including the full game on the cartridge.

This news marks a stark contrast from what other third-party developers have stated about sales of their titles on Switch 2. According to earlier reports, third-party games have been off to an exceptionally slow start on the platform with no clear reason for why. While some of it is likely because the games are ports of years-old titles from other consoles, maybe a majority of them are on controversial Game-Key Cards, which is stopping players from buying the Switch 2 versions.
