According to some new data from analyst firm Circana, Donkey Kong Bananza has already managed to climb its way into the top 20 best-selling games of 2025 so far. For its debut month on sale, the game came in at 20 on the list of year-to-date sales for US games. This is impressive not just because the Nintendo Switch 2 is so new, but because Nintendo does not disclose digital sales numbers (which explains why Mario Kart World is absent from the top 20). We can only assume that Bananza has been shifting tons of physical units versus people sticking to the eShop.
Another data point in Nintendo’s favor is that the Switch 2 has surpassed two million total units in the US, bringing it to a rather ludicrous 75% ahead of where the original Switch was by the same point in its life. As analyst Mat Piscatella says, Switch 2 was July’s best-selling piece of gaming hardware and is the highest selling for 2025 as a whole. The Switch 2 also drove tremendous sales growth for the industry while “dollar sales” of the PS5 dropped 47% compared to 2024. Xbox Series sales dropped a whopping 69% from 2024.
July 2025 U.S. Video Game Market Highlights from Circana & Sensor Tower:
A big month for Garena’s Free Fire helped lift video game content spending higher in July compared to a year ago, while Nintendo Switch 2 drove gains in hardware (while surpassing 2 million units sold along the way).

Surprisingly, there are no other Nintendo games listed in the top 20. Even if we go more micro and focus on just July 2025, Donkey Kong Bananza is the only Nintendo game listed. For the month of July, it was the third best-selling game overall behind EA Sports College Football 26, and the EA Sports MVP Bundle. Nintendo hasn’t released much of anything this year so far, unless we count Switch 2 Editions of older games, so it’s maybe not that surprising.
