In a rather sad update this morning, Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 4’s Switch 2 port will not feature split-screen co-op support when it launches this October. Despite the Borderlands series having featured it in every game (minus Borderlands 3 on Switch 1 for obvious reasons), it seems that Gearbox simply could not get the feature working on Nintendo’s latest console. Players who buy it for Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to experience cross-play with all other platforms, however.
There are thousands of possible explanations for why split-screen won’t be available on Switch 2, but apart from concerns over the console’s hardware, it could just be that local multiplayer is slowly becoming a thing of the past. There are a number of games on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that don’t feature local multiplayer support, and despite being many magnitudes more powerful than consoles, PC games almost never feature the option. With online connectivity having become standard for more than 20 years now, I guess it was inevitable that split-screen would start to disappear.
At least if you do happen to buy Borderlands 4 on Switch 2, you won’t be left out in the cold. You could even make the fun scenario of playing with a group on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, as a full party.
