The two month anniversary of the Switch 2 is almost here and Nintendo is likely ecstatic at the success of its latest console. For the latest financial report released this morning, Nintendo has revealed that the Switch 2 has moved more than 6 million units of its console since it was released on June 5th, 2025. In that same period, Mario Kart World moved 5.82 million units, making the attach rate something like 96%. Talk about an explosive start.
Since Nintendo doesn’t differentiate game sales numbers based on physical or digital, it’s hard to figure out how many Switch 2 bundles were sold. Many speculate that a majority of people grabbed the $500 console bundle to save some money on Mario Kart World, but that would not account for the astonishing numbers we’re seeing here. Whatever the case, Nintendo has amassed a mint here and the Switch 2 is destroying records across the board.
As VGC notes, the PlayStation 5 managed to ship around 3.4 million units in its first four weeks on sale and Sony reported 4.5 million units for its first seven weeks. While that console did suffer from shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nintendo Switch 2 has cleared that number with ease in the same period (though the lower overall price probably helped). Despite this success, Nintendo has not changed its financial forecast for the year and still expects to sell around 15 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2026.
Speaking to VGC, Dr. Serkan Toto (CEO of consultancy firm Kantan Games) said, “The results are very solid and a reflection of the incredible thirst by Nintendo fans for new hardware after eight years. But despite record numbers, Nintendo kept its forecast of 15 million Switch 2 units to be sold this fiscal year. This is very likely Nintendo’s typical way of lowballing forecasts unless they run into supply issues.” It could also be a way to keep things in check for an inevitable price increase, much like we’re seeing with the Switch 1 hardware soon.
Whatever happens, any fears that the Switch 2 would stall out at retail due to its higher MSRP have been put to rest. The console is off to an outstanding start.
