As one of the final announcements during today’s Partner Direct, Square Enix revealed that Octopath Traveler 0 will be heading to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4th, 2025. Billed as a brand-new entry point for the series, Octopath Traveler 0 features a continent-spanning adventure with a ludicrously large cast of characters as well as the ability for players to create their own heroes. As many have pointed out, this sounds quite a bit like a console port of the previously mobile-exclusive “Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.”

The big difference between 0 versus that mobile iteration is that this HD port will have full voice acting for all of its characters. There’s also the obvious increase in resolution, with the Switch 2 version likely rendering in 4K. Octopath Traveler has always had a beautiful aesthetic to it, and while I’m now hoping the first two games get Switch 2 releases, at least we won’t need to wait for 0 to get ported to have solid performance. The originals are a bit too ambitious for Nintendo’s older hardware, but the improvements of the Switch 2 should make this release tantalizing.

As you could expect, the physical Switch 2 version will be a game-key card while the original will have the full game on a cartridge. Square Enix has already confirmed there will be no upgrade option from the Switch 1 port (and the Switch 2 version will not have the original Switch port on it), so you’ll need to make plans ahead of time. This could eventually change, however, as was recently revealed for Dragon Quest III 2D-HD.
