Revealed during the Japanese Partner Direct today, Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest III HD-2D will be receiving a Switch 2 upgrade today for owners of the Nintendo Switch port. A free upgrade that increases the resolution output and performance, this upgrade comes just a few months ahead of Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D hitting both Switch and Switch 2. Interestingly, that remake compilation will not have a free upgrade between platforms, but Dragon Quest III is given one instead of a full physical release for Nintendo’s new console.

In an FAQ on its website, Square Enix states that the DQ3 update is purely a visual one. Players will have the option to either “prioritize frame rate or graphics,” but there will be no new content added to the game. This was likely done to ensure that save data could transfer between the two versions, something that DQ1+2 doesn’t offer. It does not mention how the file size has changed between this and the Switch 1 port, but seeing as how the PC and PS5 versions are roughly 20 GB, I would imagine it’s the same here.

The update should be live right now, so you’ll only need to have your Switch 2 connected to the internet to grab it.
