It’s been awhile since Nintendo first announced its plans to develop a live-action Legend of Zelda movie in partnership with Sony Pictures, but it looks like production is finally ramping up ahead of its planned May 2027 release. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto just revealed that the film has officially found its two leads: Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has been cast as Link.
Bragason is set to appear in the upcoming BBC historical drama King and Conqueror, while Ainsworth voiced the title character in Disney’s 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio and recently starred alongside Bryan Cranston in Everything’s Going to Be Great.
Seeing this news gave me almost the exact opposite feeling I had when the cast for the Super Mario Bros. movie was announced — loaded with instantly recognizable names. This time around, Nintendo is taking a different approach, casting two relatively unknown English actors, each with only a few roles to their names. Honestly, it’s kind of a relief. It would be tough to watch a well-known, easily recognizable actors try to embody some of the most beloved video game characters of all time. Now we just have to see who they have in mind for Ganondorf!
The Legend of Zelda officially releases on May 7th, 2027.
