Sega has confirmed that the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ will actually have the full game on cartridge for Nintendo Switch 2 owners. This is tremendous news for fans of physical editions, especially fans of Sega’s titles. For all of its launch games available on Nintendo’s new platform, Sega had opted to use the controversial “game-key cards” to distribute physical versions. It seems the negative feedback around those has prompted Sega to change its stance, and it will be providing CrossWorlds in full when the physical version launches in early 2026.
That last bit isn’t a misprint, as it seems the decision to include the full game on a cartridge has delayed the physical release for Switch 2. The FAQ revealing this information, which was buried in a press release alongside the new customization trailer, notes that the digital Switch 2 port of CrossWorlds will be available for Holiday 2025 while the physical version will hit in early 2026. Thankfully, as Sega writes in the FAQ, “The physical version will feature the full base game on a 64GB cartridge.”
That’s excellent news, as is the confirmation that there will be an upgrade path for people who opt for the Switch 1 edition. I suppose you could grab the physical Switch 1 cartridge and upgrade it for Switch 2 ahead of time, but then that kind of defeats the purpose of even having a Switch 2 cartridge. At any rate, save data will also transfer between the two versions and cross-platform multiplayer will be available on Switch 2. If you do wind up waiting, at least that wait will be worth it.
