In the competitive landscape that is the gaming market, new series are constantly coming and going. Some make a big splash initially but disappear almost as soon as they’ve arrived, while others remain more consistent but fly under the radar. The truly special series are the ones that shape the very industry around them, keeping themselves relevant for decades after their debut. One of these foundational series’ is Sonic the Hedgehog, which happens to be celebrating its 34th anniversary today!

Sonic the Hedgehog first took the world by storm all the way back in 1991 on the Sega Genesis. In a world of platformers dominated by Mario with games such as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World fresh on people’s minds, it would seem like an incredibly difficult time for a new one to take root. Despite this Sonic managed to do exactly that, with a unique formula based on dashing around at high speeds through incredibly unique and satisfying stages that set itself apart from its competitors and captured the hearts of many.

From there, the stage was set for the franchise to make itself known across the world. From the first couple sequels following the original to the vast array of games that Sonic has under its belt by now, the series has come a long way since then. With 3D platformers, racing and sports games, and even several successful movies by now, what makes Sonic the Hedgehog what it is has become more open-ended than ever. The biggest unifying factor across all of these are the beloved cast of characters and the universe they all live in that truly makes this series special.

To Sonic the Hedgehog fans all across the world, today is a day to celebrate what makes this franchise and the characters within it so important. It might be a good excuse to replay an old favorite Sonic game, or maybe even to give a new one a try.
