With the Nintendo Switch 2 becoming the fastest-selling console of all-time in just one weekend, it should be no surprise that its marquee game, Mario Kart World, has also been lighting up the sales charts. While we don’t have concrete global numbers, Famitsu recently published the Japanese sales charts for the week of June 2nd-8th, 2025, and it shows Mario and friends up on top. While the game is slightly cheaper in Japan, it’s not a dramatic difference from the $80 USD, so I guess people were just too eager to jump into their karts and cruise through the Mushroom Kingdom.

What’s interesting to note is that nine of the top ten games this past week were on Switch devices. Of those nine, four were Nintendo developed/published and five were on the Switch 2. The sole exception to this is Elden Ring Nightreign, which has managed to stick around on the sales charts for a few weeks now.

Here is the full list of Japan’s top 10 games for the week of June 2-8, 2025:

  1. Mario Kart World (Switch 2) – 78,256 units
  2. Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (Switch) – 45,703 units
  3. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time (Switch) – 17,180 units
  4. Natsume’s Book of Friends: Hazuki no Shirushi (Switch) – 16,865 units
  5. Elden Ring Nightreign (PS5) – 12,064 units
  6. Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (Switch 2) – 10,877 units
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch 2) – 7,992 units
  8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch 2) – 7,529 units
  9. Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut (Switch 2) – 7,486 units
  10. Super Mario Party Jamboree (Switch) – 6,771 units

The article also includes a look at hardware sales for the same time period, and reportedly the Switch 2 has moved 947,931 units for its debut. That’s an incredible number and denotes that nearly one third of all Switch 2 sales have come from Japan. Interestingly enough, the original Switch is still selling with a total of 2,482 units sold this past week. The Switch Lite moved another 6,089 units, and the Switch OLED moved through 8,040 units during the same period. Some people probably don’t care about getting the Switch 2, or simply couldn’t find any on sale in their region.
