In an interview posted by WCCFTech on Wild Hearts S, Koei Tecmo producer Takuto Edagawa stated that he believes the Nintendo Switch 2 is closer in power to the Xbox Series S than the PlayStation 4. While he didn’t elaborate on how or why he thinks that, having just developed a port of Wild Hearts for the Switch 2 is probably one reason for his thoughts. The game originally released in February of 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms with no last-generation version available. If the Switch 2 can actually facilitate the game without major compromises, that means it’s far more capable than the PS4 was.
“There are a lot of characteristics when it comes to raw computing power so it’s difficult to generalize,” Edagawa said, “but I think it can be thought as closer to the Series S.” Strangely enough, the game will not utilize DLSS super resolution on Nintendo’s platform despite the feature being readily available. That would have likely given the console an edge up on the Series S, but reportedly the console is powerful enough that it doesn’t even need any kind of upscaling to run the game.
On talking specifically about the difficulties of porting the game to the Switch 2, Edagawa commented, “We were able to handle the graphics quality and performance adjustments within the scope we had imagined. Especially in portable mode, the high quality LCD makes the graphics look smoother and more precise than the actual specs, which helped a lot.” On that note, Wild Hearts S actually increases the multiplayer limit from three players to four, and that was seemingly a challenge to incorporate for how detailed the character creator system is.
One other thing to note is that Edagawa really likes the new chat features of the Switch 2, specifically Game Chat. As he said, “It’s become standard practice for hardcore gamers to use tools such as Discord to communicate while they play, but having this feature incorporated into the console allows more players to enjoy it as well. It might sound exaggerated, but I think this might have an impact on gaming culture as a whole.”
Wild Hearts S is set to launch on Switch 2 on July 25th, 2025. The game is currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles with full crossplay support. The Switch 2 release will sadly lack this feature.
