On this random Tuesday morning, Nintendo has announced a brand-new Splatoon 3 spinoff titled “Splatoon Raiders” for the Switch 2. Many believed that the DJ trio “Deep Cut” would originally be the focus of a DLC campaign for Splatoon 3, but instead, it seems Nintendo felt Big Man was too much for DLC to handle. While no release date was listed, we did receive a brief trailer and even got some details about the story of this spinoff.
“In the role of a mechanic, players will go on an adventure in the mysterious Spirhalite Islands alongside the splat-tacular Deep Cut trio,” reads Nintendo’s official website. If I were to hazard a guess, it seems this spinoff will be more open-ended than the previous Splatoon campaigns, as the trailer shows an inkling exploring an island rather than engaging in obstacle courses. I don’t want to draw comparisons to Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Nintendo has been exploring open-world concepts for quite some time now (and recently with Mario Kart World).
We don’t know if Raiders will facilitate co-op or even have a regular multiplayer component alongside its campaign. As a spin-off, this doesn’t seem to be a replacement for a Splatoon 4 or even Splatoon 3, which is actually set to receive a Switch 2 update next week. My guess is that this title will launch sometime in the summer as a digital download that focuses solely on single-player.
