With the Switch 2 only a day away, it makes sense that Nintendo has begun to roll out all kinds of updates for previous games and patches for new ones ahead of the console’s launch. The most significant of these updates has to be the Day One firmware patch for the console itself, which is titled “Version 2.0.1.1.” Despite technically being Day Zero, people who have managed to snag a Nintendo Switch 2 early should now be able to actually utilize their consoles thanks to this update. It also adds in support for microSD Express Cards, which is incredibly important.

It’s kind of shocking just how much this update adds, but here is the full list of things you can now do on your Switch 2 thanks to this firmware patch:

  • Use of compatible Nintendo Switch software
  • Nintendo Switch Online
  • GameChat
  • GameShare
  • System transfer from Nintendo Switch
  • Virtual game cards
  • Nintendo eShop
  • News
  • Upload of screenshots and videos to the server
    • Nintendo Switch App on a smart device is needed to view and download screenshots and videos uploaded to the server
  • Link with the smart device apps Nintendo Switch Parental Controls and Nintendo Switch App

If you couldn’t guess, that’s pretty much a “the system is now functional” update. I don’t recall any other system in the history of this industry having so many features locked out before an update, though the Wii U actually came pretty close. On release, that console had a rather significant patch that added backward compatibility support for the Wii, something you could not do out of the box for some unexplained reason. I have to imagine with the Switch 2, Nintendo was working down to the last minute to refine its firmware, so all of these features simply weren’t finalized yet.

While I don’t like the precedent this kind of update sets for the future of consoles, at least for now, you can actually use your Switch 2 and all of its features. Maybe you can pair it with a nice updated Switch 2 Edition game, such as No Man’s Sky?
