As one of the final “Creator’s Voice” videos before the Switch 2 releases this week, Nintendo has invited Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in to talk about the unique new features of its latest console. Most of the video is stuff we already know about the device, such as how it contains a custom Nvidia SOC, can output 4K and HDR, and will even be capable of ray-tracing in select titles. Where the video becomes interesting is when Huang notes that the Nintendo Switch 2 represents an evolution of the vision the late Satoru Iwata had for hybrid gaming.

Talking about the original Switch and how Nvidia was able to bring Iwata’s dream to life (around the 40 second mark in the video), Huang states, “We lost Iwata-san before the launch, but his clarity, his purpose: it still inspires our work every day.” He then talks up how well the original Switch did, which is still pretty remarkable. The console has sold over 150 million units and will comfortably rest as the second best-selling home console ever… unless the Switch 2 tops it.

The rest of the video then goes over all the expected beats, but it’s clear that Huang wanted to continue Iwata’s legacy when it comes to console design. The question of how much of an upgrade Nintendo’s next console will deliver remains unanswered, but the more iterative design makes me realize that Nintendo isn’t trying to fix what isn’t broken. Here’s to you, Iwata-san.
