Online pre-orders may have been sold out for months, but Target has revealed that it will have Nintendo Switch 2 units available in-store for launch day. As noted on the official Target website, shoppers who come to its stores on June 5th, 2026, around opening will be able to nab themselves a Switch 2 or the Mario Kart World bundle before the general populace gets a chance on the Target app the following day. This is likely being done to curb scalping, though you just know someone will head to their local Target early to resell the console for an exorbitant fee on eBay.
Most of the webpage puffs up the Switch 2 as the next step in gaming and all that marketing jazz. There’s a quote from Target’s SVP of merchandising, Cassandra Jones, that reads, “At Target, we don’t just launch products — we create moments. The Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most anticipated gaming releases in years, and we’re making it unforgettable for our guests in a uniquely Target way,” which… sure. Still, I guess actually keeping units set aside for shoppers is better than people going to a store on launch day only to be met with tumbleweeds.
Here’s what to do at Target for a Switch 2
As for what you’ll need to do if you head to your local Target for a Switch 2 next week, it’s pretty simple. You’ll need to line up in the designated queuing area, and a Target employee will give you a physical or digital ticket for the console. All ticketed guests will be directed to the electronics area, where they will be able to purchase their item of choice. All consoles will be limited to one item per guest, with a choice between the standard console and the Mario Kart World bundle. Tickets will be available until all stock is accounted for or up to ten minutes before opening.
Target discounts during Switch 2’s release
Since we live in a capitalist society, Target will also be running discounts on select Nintendo merchandise during launch weekend, including 20% off character and graphic tees, and 20% off Nintendo and Pokémon toys. If you’re a Target Plus member, you can nab 60% off gaming furniture and 40% off on mini-fridges or power strips. I suppose if you’re going to be in town for a Switch 2, you might as well get some other things to go with it.
All in all, this seems like a good way to go about things that will hopefully allow some people to legitimately acquire a Switch 2 for MSRP. With the economy the way it is, at least you won’t have to pay an inflated fee just to get Mario Kart World.
