While the Switch 2 will feature a pretty obvious hardware improvement over its predecessor, one of the console’s unique features will be “GameChat.” A merging of Discord and instant messaging, the feature allows up to four people to video chat while playing games on their console with no interruption. It looks fun, and is at least one way to stay in touch with friends while you’re both enjoying something individually. Before you’ll be able to engage with the feature, however, you’ll need to input a phone number to complete registration.
People on Reddit noticed the language included on Nintendo’s official website yesterday. An FAQ for GameChat notes, “Mobile phone number registration required to use GameChat.” What follows is a recommendation that children get parental approval before using the app, and that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature parental controls that can limit the feature on specific accounts. At first, it sounds a little ridiculous, but when throwing kids into the mix, it does make sense.
Many years ago, when SwapNote was still active on 3DS, Nintendo disabled the ability to send photos to other users due to concerns of offensive material being sent to children. There were some unconfirmed reports of adults abusing children via the app, so Nintendo put a complete lockdown on SwapNote for everyone. It’s not hard to see this phone number requirement being another step to prevent the same issues from happening again. It also follows suit with most social media platforms, which have similar requirements for usage.
It’s unlikely Nintendo will drop this requirement, so if you’re planning on using GameChat extensively, make sure you know before going in.
