Over the past 15 years, most of the Super Mario cast has remained pretty similar in appearance. Ever since the New Super Mario Bros. era of games, the looks of the characters have been fairly standardized. In recent times, however, they’ve begun to experiment once more. From Super Mario Bros. Wonder giving us a new Mario look to Donkey Kong’s extreme overhaul for Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, there’s a lot of change taking place. Now, we’ve got a fresh new batch of renders to look at, including a new character redesign that many have been eager to see.

A new image of the main Mario cast was shown off, featuring a whole host of brand-new renders for the characters. While most of the familiar faces look largely the same as they always have, it’s clear to see the quality has been enhanced a bit upon close inspection. Of course, then there’s Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong who all look more noticeably different, especially Donkey Kong who even got a new pose just for this.

That being said, Donkey Kong wasn’t the only Kong to receive a new look. Thanks to a Nintendo Switch News article, we got our first glimpse of Diddy Kong’s brand-new redesign for Donkey Kong Bananza. Much like Donkey Kong, he got a full redesign, albeit with much more subtle changes. Most notably his teeth, feet, and hat have been improved, with other more general changes to make him match the classic feel that Donkey Kong got as well.

It’s nice to see these iconic characters getting some much needed touch ups in the modern day. Even if many of the updates are subtle, it’s a good change of pace from reusing the same renders year after year. With the Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon, it’ll be nice to see some of these new looks in action before long!
