In a surprising announcement, it’s been revealed that most game media will not receive a Switch 2 console until at least launch day. The reason is apparently due to a major patch that will be pushed out at launch.
Whatever the reason may be, journalists are not happy, as they won’t be able to review the console or any of the launch titles until the Nintendo Switch 2 releases. This has also caused some rifts with developers, as their games also won’t be reviewed until after June 5th, with some wondering if they should have waited to release on the console. To remedy this, Nintendo will hold press events for Mario Kart World, their heavy hitter for their new system, allowing press to get a look at the game and have some sort of review ready.
It’s been a roller coaster for Nintendo, as they’ve had to deal with massive roadblocks ever since the Switch 2’s reveal and this news certainly doesn’t help. However, I wonder if a console review is needed for the Switch 2. We’ve already seen the specs and have been able to see hands-on videos from the Switch 2 Experience events, and it’s not like this is a brand-new path for Nintendo. It’s the Switch but bigger and better; you’re either sold on it or you’re not. Game reviews are a different story though — that will be our first look at how the system runs these massive games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Split Fiction.
