If you’re a dedicated Super Smash Bros. player who was looking for the love of your life to share your gaming hobby with, the recently closed “SmashTogether” app may have been perfect for you. I’m using the past tense here because Nintendo has issued a cease and desist order to its creators, so the app will not be going live. Sadly, all of the Smash Bros. players will now need to actually talk to people in real life if they want to find their significant others. The horror!
As reported by many outlets now, SmashTogether will not be going live despite having announced its existence over a year ago. Revealed in June of 2024, the app was dubbed the “premium dating app for Smashers” and was said to have a “robust matchmaking algorithm, tailored to connect you with your ideal Smash Partner.” While I do think the idea of a dating app with a heavy focus on gaming is neat, this Smash Bros. themed one feels like a niche of a niche of a niche.
While the creators haven’t posted the specific cease and desist letter Nintendo sent them, it was sent out just 24 hours before SmashTogether was set to go live. The app was scheduled to enter an open beta phase and likely would have developed new features based on feedback from that period. According to its creators, SmashTogether had received around 400 sign-ups before this C&D, so it would have had a decent enough user base to test things out with.

Honestly, you can probably figure out why Nintendo had this app shut down, even if the company has become incredibly litigious in recent years. Associating Smash Bros. with “smashing” other people is not something that Nintendo wants floating around.
