As of now, video game movies are doing better than they ever have before. While one could argue this renaissance started all the way back in 2020 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, things really took off to a whole new level when The Super Mario Bros. Movie aired in early 2023. The film immediately took the box office by storm, becoming the first video game movie to gross over $1 billion. Naturally, ever since the confirmation of a sequel last year, fans have been eagerly awaiting more news about the film. While there hasn’t been any news from Nintendo themselves, the title of the movie may have accidentally slipped out.
In an article shared by NBCUniversal, a film named “Super Mario World” was listed among other movies set to be streaming on Peacock after their release. The mention was removed from the article not long after, but not before catching attention from keen-eyed readers. While not technically official, this title would make sense given what is known about the film now. During a post-credits scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Yoshi egg is briefly seen hatching, which many presumed to be a teaser for the sequel film. Yoshi himself first debuted in Super Mario World on the SNES, so if Yoshi is meant to be integral to the plot of the sequel, a title of the same name would certainly make sense.

Of course, while this does seem to paint a pretty clear picture, it’s important to keep in mind that this is still all conjecture. It’s very possible the name making its way into the article was not the final title and merely a placeholder, or that it could be changed still between now and the 2026 release date. That being said, it is undeniably very interesting to imagine what it could mean if this is the official title, especially given the aforementioned Yoshi connection. We’ll have to just wait and see more when the movie is officially revealed sometime in the future!
