In a post on social media this morning, Square Enix announced that it had canceled development of a Kingdom Hearts mobile spinoff titled “Missing-Link.” Originally meant to take players on an all-new journey disconnected from Sora’s struggles, it seems as though the company didn’t believe it could deliver the level of quality that fans of the franchise have come to expect. Some of it also sounds as if Square Enix didn’t believe it could maintain a live-service game that would be sustainable over a long period.

While Missing-Link being put out to pasture is sad, Square Enix has reassured fans that the company is hard at work on Kingdom Hearts IV. Announced back in 2022, the game will continue Sora’s story but will be focused on an entirely new conflict disconnected from Organization XIII and people having an X in their names. There’s no word on when that game will see the light of day, but considering how much fervor there has been for Kingdom Hearts despite the long gestation of III, fans are certainly patient.
