In a bit of news that probably isn’t too surprising for most people, Take-Two has decided it will be delaying Grand Theft Auto VI into 2026. The new release date for the game will be May 26th, 2026, after previously being scheduled for Fall 2025. In a statement to various outlets, Rockstar apologized for the delay and stated the delay would be used to deliver “the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The full statement, which IGN published, reads:

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick supported the delay in an additional statement following its reveal. “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI,” Zelnick said, “which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.” He then continued about how he believes Take-Two will continue to deliver a multi-year period of growth for its shareholders, which is ultimately the most important thing ever (/s).

While GTA 6 hasn’t been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, it seems very likely that Rockstar will eventually port the game there. With the hubbub around the console’s launch reaching a fever pitch, it’s bound to be a sales juggernaut and could wind up becoming one of the biggest launches in console gaming history. Maybe this delay is to ensure the Switch 2 port isn’t left behind, but only time will tell.
