In a new report from Bloomberg, it’s been suggested that the Nintendo Switch 2 will move around five million consoles in its first week globally. That would wind up making it the fastest-selling launch for a console ever.

For residents of the US and Canada, yesterday was when they finally had the chance to pre-order the Switch 2… well, if they were lucky. While we’ve heard for months that Nintendo had reportedly been building up stock of its next console to combat high demand, it seems that very demand outpaced anyone’s expectations. As of the time of writing, you cannot nab a pre-order for the Switch 2 at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, or GameStop. I guess the $450 price tag was not a deterrent.

When discussing the sales momentum to Bloomberg, Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda stated, “The Switch 2’s launch week sales in Japan are likely somewhere between 800,000 to a million units. That can be translated to around 5 million in the first week globally. That speed is unprecedented.” According to Nintendo of Japan, it received around 2.2 million applications for its lottery sale, which took into account things like your playtime on a Nintendo Online account and if you’d been subscribed to Switch Online for at least 12 months.

Detailing things further, Pelham Smithers of the research house Pelham Smithers Associates added, “As Japan accounts for a third of the global Switch installation base, it implies 6.6 million pre-orders globally.” Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean 6.6 million in one week, but it seems that Nintendo’s latest console will have a tremendous first year at retail.
