Over the last year and some change, Microsoft has pretty much shifted away from making Xbox consoles the only place where players can enjoy Xbox games. While the company transitioned to supporting PC with day-and-date Xbox releases some years ago, it was only recently that we began seeing Xbox Games Studios titles appear on both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. With the upcoming release of the Switch 2 just a couple of months away, it seems Microsoft wants to further its relationship with Nintendo by supporting the new console with Xbox titles.
In an interview with Variety the other day, CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer straight up stated, “I want to support Switch 2.” While he didn’t mention which projects would be making the transition to Nintendo’s latest console, it stands to reason that something like Doom: The Dark Ages or even the recently leaked Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster will probably see a release on the latest device. Spencer continued, “I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them.”
When asked about whether Nintendo’s revealing of its latest console had made Spencer antsy about Xbox’s upcoming projects, he said, “I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building… There are 3 billion people who play video games on the planet, and I get up every morning and think about how Xbox can be more relevant to the 3 billion people who play.” I guess in his mind, it’s better to have people talking about Xbox on a rival platform than not mentioning the brand at all.
While I don’t necessarily disagree with that, the sad truth right now is that Microsoft is making a big push towards AI for the future of its gaming segment. Not only has Microsoft introduced a tool to assist with game idea generation, but we have a truly horrific “demo” of Quake 2 being run on Microsoft Co-Pilot AI. Spencer might want to support the Switch 2 with cool games and such, but he really should be talking about how his company is complicit in destroying the very medium he claims he loves.
