The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom look like solid upgrades over their Switch 1 counterparts, but the majority of new features will be tied to a smartphone app called “Zelda Notes.” While we already know quite a bit about what that app offers (such as voice guidance, maps for finding Korok seeds, and the ability to share QR codes), a new feature has been spotted by YouTuber Zeltik: equipment repairs.
One of the features of Zelda Notes will be the ability for players to earn a random bonus each day. While a lot of these are similar to what scanning amiibo did for players, there is a new reward that can crop up from time to time. As the name suggests, equipment repair will let you repair any piece of equipment you have in your possession. This, apparently, isn’t limited to specific weapons and will even function on amiibo rewards. It only works for a single item though, and you aren’t guaranteed the drop, so it’s still not a proper repair option.
It’s probably not controversial to say that most people disliked the equipment durability in Breath of the Wild (and by extension, Tears of the Kingdom). While it makes sense from a game design standpoint, the rate at which weapons break was a bit silly, and it was bizarre that you couldn’t repair or upgrade your weapons in any manner. Tears of the Kingdom introduced a method by which you could repair specific weapons by dropping them in front of Rock Octoroks. It was cute, but not really intuitive, and it had a daily limit.
I’m not entirely sure why this option wasn’t simply added to the main game, but it does follow suit from some of Nintendo’s more recent design decisions. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD features a more convenient fast travel option if you happen to own the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo and scan it each time. Locking features behind physical gimmicks seems to be the Nintendo MO nowadays.
