With the upgraded components inside the Switch 2, the console is now capable of playing drastically more advanced games than its predecessor. One such is Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s followup to The Witcher 3 that was troublesome for even the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when it released in late 2020. It honestly feels like a miracle that the game will even work on Nintendo hardware, but as we saw with a lot of games last generation, it could have been a situation where only the main game was on the cartridge while any DLC was included as a code.
Thankfully, that won’t be the case as CD Projekt Red’s community manager confirmed the entire Cyberpunk 2077 experience will be available on a single Switch 2 cartridge.
In a video posted by YouTuber BeatEmUps, he showcases some footage of Cyberpunk 2077 running on the Switch 2 and asks CDPR about whether or not the entire game is available on the cartridge. The community manager confirmed that it was and responded, “We specifically went for the highest capacity, so 64 gigs.” Not only does that give us confirmation for physical game collectors, but it also confirms how large the cartridge capacity will be this generation.
For Switch 1 games, the max capacity available for physical cartridges was 32 GB. This limited publishers and developers quite a bit and is the reason that so many of them took to selling partial games on cartridges that then required a download. For Switch 2, the larger capacity should mean we see that happening less often, but then the already announced “game-key card” format means some developers will opt to save cost by not even offering a true physical edition.
Even still, it’s great that CD Projekt Red has opted to include the entirety of Cyberpunk 2077 on a cartridge. During the same video above, CDPR commented about how their Switch port of The Witcher 3 was much less profitable due to using the largest cartridge size, but the company decided to do it again for Cyberpunk because it felt that was the correct choice. I, too, think it’s the correct choice.
