One of the major turning points in the history of console gaming was the advent of built-in digital game stores. These built-in shopping services soon became beloved in their own right, with applications like the Wii Shop Channel living on in the minds of many thanks in part to its soothing background music. Despite this, it seems as if the idea of an eShop theme has gone by the wayside in recent years, with the Nintendo Switch’s eShop being notably silent. Many are hoping to see the upcoming Switch 2’s eShop feature its own gentle background melody, but it seems that won’t be the case.

The producer of the Nintendo Switch 2, Kouichi Kawamoto, confirmed in an interview that the Switch 2’s eShop will not feature its own background melody, much like the original Switch. Kawamoto’s reasoning as to why not was fairly straightforward, stating that “Unlike back then, the eShop now has lots of videos that are showcasing the games. We didn’t want to intrude on that, so we don’t have music there.” As nice as it would be to see the eShop music return, it seems fair to say that won’t be happening anytime soon.

While we don’t yet know what the Switch 2’s eShop will look like, Kawamoto stated that his priority would be performance. “I wanted to make sure that it was a smooth experience. That the scrolling of the list doesn’t stall, that it’s very smooth, pages load fast,” stated Kawamoto. While there may be no pleasant tunes to accompany it, it is at the very least nice to know that browsing will be easier than ever once the Switch 2 arrives this June.
