Have you ever tried to use a PC from the comfort of your couch, but been so frustrated that no surface can accurately capture a desk that you threw your mouse across the room in disgust and then took a sledgehammer to your PC to vent your anger? I certainly haven’t, and I’m pretty sure Nintendo’s Kouichi Kawamoto hasn’t either, but he’s happy to confirm that the Switch 2 Joy-Con’s mouse functionality will work on your pants. No need to lug a desk in front of your sofa just to experience smooth aiming!
During a press conference for the Switch 2’s unveiling yesterday, Kawamoto told a story about how the mouse functionality was added to the Switch 2 Joy-Con during the console’s development.
“So as I was playing PC games, the experience of playing is fun, it’s engaging, and I was thinking ‘what if we could bring this to the Nintendo Switch 2?’ So we brought it to the Nintendo Switch 2,” Kawamoto says. “But […] usually the table is quite far away from where you’re sitting on the sofa, so it generally depends on the material, but we’ve made adjustments so that you can control the mouse on your pants.”
I’m not sure why Kawamoto hasn’t ever heard of a sofa mouse pad, but then I’m all for figuring out unique solutions to esoteric problems. This type of thinking then led to the creation of Drag x Drive, one of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch games that is a fascinating take on murderball which utilizes both Joy-Con as mice. I wouldn’t expect wild new game ideas to come out of the mouse functionality, but surprisingly enough, shooters should find a brand-new home on the console thanks to this inclusion.
