During yesterday’s Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo spent a surprisingly decent chunk of time describing GameChat, a new system feature that is basically like all of the social features Microsoft introduced to the Xbox 360 20 years ago. It’s charming how old-school Nintendo can be sometimes, but one thing that wasn’t very Nintendo was the design of its new camera. It’s, essentially, just a basic webcam.
Enter peripheral manufacturer Hori! If you are interested in utilizing GameChat to its fullest and want a camera that doesn’t look like the government is spying on you, you can grab a camera fashioned after the Piranha Plant from Super Mario! Why this wasn’t the default camera is beyond me, but I also don’t know that I’d want a Plant staring into my soul as I try to talk with my friends via knock-off Discord.
If you’re worried that this camera isn’t “official,” fear not. As with most of Hori’s accessories for the current Switch, this product carries the “Nintendo Seal of Approval” and will even feature official Switch 2 branding on its box. It’s also cheaper than the official Nintendo Switch camera, coming in at €39.99 versus €59.99. That might mean a degradation of quality, but then we don’t know how good or bad the official camera even is. This also makes me believe that any third-party USB-C webcam will work, which could mean even Logitech stuff is compatible.
German retailer Media Markt and will most likely make its way to other online vendors soon. Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing links for it on our socials in the near future!
