During a string of third-party announcements for Nintendo Switch 2 April Direct, Sega casually announced that Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut would be coming to the platform. While most people likely know what Yakuza 0 is (its US release is eight years old now), it’s interesting to see the “Director’s Cut” subtitle added to the game. Seeing as how the game’s director, Kazuki Hosokawa, left Sega with series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi in 2021, I think the title is misleading.
Nomenclature aside, this belated port to Nintendo’s hardware is likely not much different from the original version of the game. Current RGG Studios director Masayoshi Yokoyama stated that there will be new cutscenes, but that doesn’t point to differing gameplay. What does is a “blink and you’ll miss it” bit of gameplay at the end. Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut will feature some kind of multiplayer mode that looks like a massive brawl between friends. You can play as some of the antagonists in 0, which is pretty fun. There are also hints of an English dub being added, though that isn’t confirmed or denied.
With the Switch 2 supporting 4K HDR and 120 FPS, it could mean that this port of the game will wind up being the best console iteration of Yakuza 0. Sega didn’t officially mention anything else, so it’ll be a long wait to find out what is new with Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut.
