Kicking off the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was a brand-new trailer for Mario Kart World. Hinted at during the Switch 2 “reveal” earlier this year, Mario Kart World is the next installment in the series that goes a little beyond being just Mario Kart 9. As many sussed from that short teaser, World features much larger tracks, brand-new items, character redesigns, and up to 24-player races.
The biggest addition to Mario Kart World is its more open-ended design. While the traditional Cup format of past Mario Kart games is available for single-player (and presumably unlocking stuff), you can now drive off the track and explore a massive world. It seems to be borrowing heavily from Forza Horizon, Microsoft’s own open-world racer that has been extremely popular. We’re not sure exactly how this will factor into the overall package, but it’s certainly a cool expansion of Mario Kart.
More details for Mario Kart World will be unveiled in a specific Nintendo Direct set for April 17th, 2025. While the trailer shown didn’t reveal a date, we know from a later announcement that the game will be available on June 5th, 2025. Much like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this is bound to become a massive seller.
