A highlight for many from today’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was the long-awaited confirmation of GameCube titles coming to the Switch Online subscription. More surprising, then, would be the reveal of a full sequel to a GameCube gem much later in the presentation.

Kirby Air Riders, a sequel to Kirby Air Ride, was revealed! No gameplay was showcased, but we saw familiar Air Ride machines and the familiar charm the Kirby series brings. Perhaps the biggest surprise beyond the game itself was who’s at the helm: none other than Masahiro Sakurai.

The creator of Kirby hasn’t directed an entry in the series since the original Air Ride, making for a double homecoming of sorts. With Sakurai presumably not working on Super Smash Bros. at the moment, it was a mystery as to what he might be directing until today.

Look forward to more on Kirby Air Riders in the future, with the game set for a 2025 release.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
