With the recent shutdown of Multiversus and Warner Bros.’ general disdain for anything fun, this latest rumor is sure to aggravate a ton of people. According to the Sacred Symbols podcast host, Warner Bros. San Diego had begun production of a Mario Kart-like kart racer featuring its iconic characters towards the start of the pandemic. The project would have been a free-to-play online-only title and would have released on consoles before jumping to PC and mobile.

MultiVersus shuts down less than a year after launch

Why was it scrapped? Supposedly, the main issue with the project was the high employee turnover at WB San Diego. The host stated that more than 100 developers had worked on the title, but the project was dropped shortly after inception. Reportedly, the game would have gone by the title of either “WB Racers” or “XDR,” which stands for cross-drift racers.

“There was quite a bit of animosity internally,” the host said, “with people who worked on the game who felt that it was unfair that their sister team, Player First, got to launch Multiversus twice when they never got a shot to launch at all after all of that work.” Animosity or not, WB would eventually shut down WB San Diego, Player First Games, and other iconic studios such as Monolith Productions, late last month, and garner a ton of negative press because of the decision.
