With the latest season of Major League Baseball coming up, both Nintendo and the Seattle Mariners have announced a new partnership that will see all players wearing Nintendo-branded jerseys for regular season and postseason games. A press release on the MLB website lays out the details, which includes a Nintendo racetrack logo on the sleeves of the jerseys for home games and a Nintendo Switch 2 logo on jerseys for away games.

Kevin Martinez, the president of business operations for the Mariners, said, “Nintendo and the Mariners have been inextricably linked since 1992. Now, each time the Mariners take the field, our jersey sleeves will help serve as a reminder of all that Nintendo of America has done for the Northwest community and the team. There isn’t a better partnership in Major League Baseball. We are grateful for our incredible relationship with Nintendo.”

Nintendo’s history with the Mariners

For those unaware, former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi bought the Mariners in 1992 after their former owner Jeff Smulyan was looking to move the team to Tampa Bay. Yamauchi remained CEO of the team until his passing in 2013. A few years later in 2016, Nintendo would sell its majority stake in the team, but surprisingly, former chairman of Nintendo of America Howard Lincoln would become the CEO of the team before this sale.

Julio Rodriguez’s role in the partnership Nintendo x Mariners partnership

In addition to the branded jerseys, All-Star centerfielder Julio Rodriguez will be serving as a brand ambassador for the team and Nintendo this season. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said of the partnership, “It’s a genuine thrill to be able to partner with such a talented team, including bright stars like Julio. Our history with the Mariners goes back decades so this really feels like coming home. Nintendo has a lot of exciting news this year and through collaborations like this one, we can’t wait to create even more smiles across all generations. Go Mariners!”
