With the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation less than a month away now, people are understandably very eager to learn more about the successor to the Switch. While more is known now than has ever been before, there has been little in the way of specific information made available quite yet. That being said, for those who are eager to hear all they can before the upcoming direct arrives, there’s good news. In some recently released filings with the FCC, new information has been confirmed, including NFC support and more!
As was the case with the transition from the Wii U to the Switch, amiibo collectors have long been wondering whether or not amiibo will make a return on the Switch 2. While there’s no way to be certain on that, the test filings reveal NFC capability much like the original Switch, with the sensor located in the right Joy-Con just the same. This wasn’t all that was gleaned from these reports however; there was also confirmation that the Switch 2 will be using Wi-Fi 6 as opposed to the original’s Wi-Fi 5, which may suggest faster internet speeds. Lastly, diagrams confirmed what many suspected, that the USB-C port located on the top of the system will function as a secondary charging port, likely for ease of playing in tabletop mode while charging the system.

This news undoubtedly comes off as exciting to both general Nintendo fans and especially amiibo collectors around the world. While there’s no confirmation that new amiibo will continue to be made for the Switch 2, it seems reasonably likely. It is possible that the NFC support is purely for the sake of backwards compatibility, but at the same time it feels like a waste to have built in NFC support purely for such a purpose. Only time will tell though, maybe by the time the April 2nd presentation rolls around we’ll know more for sure!
Please note that we didn’t go into the technicalities of the NFC support, nor the Switch’s use of Wi-Fi 6, in our article. We highly recommend browsing to our source, The Verge, for further reading.
